Nagore Road, Penang (29 September 2012)
Nagore Road, or
Jalan Nagor, is one of the minor roads in
George Town. It runs in a single direction from
Hutton Lane to
Burmah Road, and is intersected somewhere near the middle by
Bawasah Road.
Nagore Road is lined with Straits-style double-storey terrace houses. Many of these, originally residential, have been converted into restaurants and food and beverage outlets called Nagore Place and Nagore Square. Those near the junction with Burmah Road still retain their original Shanghai- plaster finishing. The houses have beautiful façades with their walls and five-foot-ways embellished with floral tiles in the Nyonya style.
There are also mews on Nagore Road which, as I write (May 2014) are also undergoing rehabilitation, probably to be turned into a boutique hotel.
Nagore Road was named after Nagore, a town in Nagapattinam District in Tamil Nadu, India. This is because there used to be an Indian Muslim settlement towards Hutton Lane.
In the early 20th century, a synagogue was established here, at the junction with Bawasah Road. The building at 28 Nagore Road is still standing today and is in a fine state of preservation. It now houses a couple of photo imagine businesses.
