Nanking Road, George Town, at junction with McNair Street (2 December 2008)

Nanking Road, or Jalan Nanking in Malay, is one of the roads in the Seven Streets Precinct of George Town.

Nanking Road was developed at the turn of the 20th century. Before that it was one of the village trails. Nanking Road links McNair Street to Brick Kiln Road. It is one of the roads in the Seven Streets Precinct that does not go all the way east to Bridge Street.

Nanking Road (along with Peking Street) was an late entry into the Seven Streets Precinct, when Herriot Street, called Pek Tiau Lor, has already been laid and named. Nanking Road was thus known in Hokkien as Chit Tiau Lor Puah, or Seven-and-a-half Street.

Getting there

Nanking Road is not on the bus route, but Rapid Penang Bus 302 and 401 serve the bus stop at Brick Kiln Road.

In Other Words ...

Nanking Road is known in Hokkien as Chit1 Tiau3 Lor3, or in full, Koay Kanga Kee Chit Tiau Lor, meaning the 7th street after the Prangin Canal.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
