New Lane Fish BihunNew Lane Fish Bihun (10 October 2014)

New Lane Fish Bihun is a popular bihun stall on New Lane, in George Town, Penang. It operates out of Kedai Kopi Goh Chew. It was my wife's favourite bihun stall, and we often come here as she enjoyed the bihun very much. I did not quite fancy the bihun, and usually ordered the yee foo mee from the next stall. It is one of my favourite yee foo mee.

However, in 2013 we stopped coming for a while because my wife found out that the hawker she usually bought from was no longer frying the bihun, and has transferred the stall to another younger hawker (we heard he could be the son or relative). She also noticed a price hike, and partly due to that, we stopped coming for a while. A year would pass before we decide to give the stall another try, hence the taste test below.

It has been a very long time since I last had the New Lane Fish Bihun at Kedai Kopi Goh Chew, so today I decided to join my wife it having it for dinner. This was to be the first time we are ordering it from a new hawker, as the previous hawker had since "retired". The price has risen somewhat since the last time we had it over a year ago. It now costs RM6.50 per plate. Though I couldn't remember how much it was when we had it the last time, I did record down that the last time we saw the price but did not order was at RM6.00. So it has risen another 50 sen since.

This is how the dish looks like:

There appears to be more pieces of fish now that was given by the past hawker. There are at least five pieces, whereas in the past we were only given three. Also, on another positive note, the fish was very crispy and nice. And unlike previously, I do not detect any fish bones.

On the other hand, the bihun itself was nothing to shout about. It was a bit on the dry side. I commented to my wife that it was also not very salty, and that it used to be a bit saltier before. My wife said that this is probably due to heightened health consciousness that hawkers don't make their dish as salty as before.

The chilli seems quite spicy, or rather, spicier than I remember it to be previously. And also more sour. In total, I have to say that there is improvement to the taste of the fish itself, and if there's a reason to come here, that would be it. Other than that, it is like eating a pricey economy bihun. And here's my rating for it:
