Ngah Aboo Lane, Penang (25 November 2017)
Ngah Aboo Lane, or Lorong Ngah Aboo, is a minor road in
George Town, Penang. The no-through road connects on one end with
Kimberley Street. It comes to a dead end facing the compound of the Central Police Station on
Claimant Place.
According to the book
Aceh Tanah Rencong, Ngah Aboo (whose name is also written as Nyak Abu) is an Acehnese trader and Anti-Dutch supporter. He was involved in the Aceh Conflict of 1874. He was part of the Council of Eight, or Dewan Delapan, which also included Teuku Paya, Teuku Ibrahim, Syekh Ahmad, Panglima Perang Haji Yusuf, Gullahmeiden, Umar and Nyak Kassim.
1 Pepper traders with interest in Aceh, they initiated an effort to send arms in the form of 15,000 weapons and 5,000 boxes of bullets to aid the conflict. However the consignment was intercepted by the British colonial authorities in Singapore, and an embargo was put in place forbidding the export of arms to Acheh.
The entire western side of Ngah Aboo Lane is occupied by Bee Chin Heong, the company that makes Chinese prayer paraphernalia. This includes the shophouses facing Kimberley Street as well as a warehouse facing Ngah Aboo Lane.
There is a hawker stall at the junction of Ngah Aboo Lane selling duck meat koay teow thng. It appears to be drawing quite a crowd, though I have not tried it here before.
