Nirvana Road, George Town, Penang (25 November 2010)
Nirvana Road (Traditional/Simplified Chinese: 尼哇纳路), also known today as
Jalan Nirvana, is a road in
George Town, Penang. It is the main road through the Taman Nirvana housing estate where most of the road names were Buddhist-inspired. I believe this is due to its relation to the
Penang Buddhist Association nearby. In all likelihood, the land in the area was developed by the same people who were influential leaders of the association. The name nirvana, in the Buddhist context, refers to the stillness of mind after the fires of desire has been completely extinguished.
Nirvana Road connects
Anson Road to
Lim Eow Thoon Road. It also branches off to a number of side roads including
Dharma Road,
Deva Pada Road,
Bodhi Avenue and
Kim Bian Aik Road. At the northern end of Nirvana Road is
Taman Lalulintas, a small park for people to learn traffic skills.
