North Butterworth Container Terminal (11 December 2017)
North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) (GPS: 5.40901, 100.36769) is the main cargo terminal of Penang Port. Also called the Butterworth Deep Water Wharves, it faces the North Channel of the Penang Channel. The terminal was built by Gamuda and was completed in 1994.
The container wharf of the North Butterworth Container Terminal is located off shore from the Penang Mainland. It is linked to the cargo distribution apron by the approach bridge.
The North Butterworth Container Terminal is easily visible from Penang Island, and is noted for its row of gigantic gantry cranes. As of 2013
1, the terminal handles 1.16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of container cargo, of which 56% is imported cargo while the rest heading for export. This actually falls short of the targeted 1.3 million TEUs.

The Star reported that a RM150 million expansion plan for the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) has been approved to upgrade its facilities to accommodate bigger ships, helping to transform NBCT into a major port of call.
