Nostalgic Meal Order, by Louis Gan (20 March 2013)
Nostalgic Meal Order (GPS: 5.41564, 100.32667) is a mural by Penang artist
Louis Gan. It graces the wall of
Pinang's Pinang along
Kinta Lane in George Town, Penang.
"Nostalgic Meal Order" depicts a young Nyonya maiden receiving by basket a meal of noodles from the hawker on the street below. The scene recalls life in George Town of the early 20th century, when upper-crust Nyonyas lived cloistered from public view, and conducted their meal shopping via baskets in which they place the cash. The hawker places the meal - usually
wantan mee or
Hokkien mee - into the basket along with the change. Louis Gan vividly captures this snapshot of a time past for posterity.

I enjoy "Nostalic Meal Order" as much as Louis's first mural,
"Brother and Sister on a Swing". The features of both the young lady and the somewhat rotund hawker are beautifully rendered. I particularly love how Louis did the facial expression on the jovial bespectacled hawker - priceless.
The unveiling of "Nostalgic Meal Order" coincides with Louis Gan's first solo exhibition held at the same location from 16 March to 14 April, 2013. For site details, go to the page on
