The Australian Capital Territory, also written as ACT, is a self-governing internal territory that encompasses the capital of the Commonwealth of Australia. It covers an area of 2,358 sq km (910 sq mi), including 77 sq km (30 sq mi) of water.

The Australian Capital Territory is an enclave within New South Wales. The territory was created under the Australian Constitution of 1901, and was created in 1911, two years before Canberra was established.

The ACT is located at an average elevation of 650 meters above sea level. Its highest point is Bimberi Peak, at 1,912 m (6,273 ft). Due to its distance from the coast, it experiences four distinct seasons. The summers in Canberra is blazingly hot while its winters are cold and foggy. The mountains within the ACT are often covered in snow during winter.

The Australian Capital Territory has a population of 351,000 (2010 estimate). It is within the Australian Eastern Standard Time zone (+10 GMT) and observes Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April at +11 GMT. The postal abbreviation is ACT.

Going to the Australian Capital Territory

By Plane
The Canberra International Airport (CBR) receives flights from all the major cities of Australia. From the airport, you can take a shuttle to the bus interchange in Civic. There's one every half an hour on weekdays and every hour on weekends. The fare is A$9.00. Taxis to Civic costs A$25.00.

By Train
The NSW Countrylink is a train service between Sydney and Canberra. There are two trains per day. It takes 4 hours to make the journey.

By Road
The Australian Capital Territory is 290 km from Sydney, and can be reach in three and a half hours.
