Campbelltown is a suburb of Sydney located 51 km to the southwest of the Sydney Central Business District. It is the administrative center for the local government area called the City of Campbelltown. Campbelltown has a population of about 8,000 people (2012 estimate) within the City of Campbelltown, which has a population of 153,000 people.
Campbelltown was named after the maiden name of Mrs Lachlan Macquarie, Elizabeth Macquarie née Campbell, wife of the Governor of New South Wales. It was one of the settlements that was established by Macquarie. The earliest settler was John Macarthur who arrived in 1805. Four years later he was given land grants in the area between Camden and Liverpool. The entire region comprising the towns of Campbelltown and Camden today bears the name Macarthur. Campbelltown was originally written as Campbell-Town, and later simplified to Campbelltown.
The town of Campbelltown was incorporated in 1882 while the boundaries of the City of Campbelltown was formed in 1949. It was declared a City in 1968. Today Campbelltown is a developed town with modern amenities. It is home to the University of Western Sydney. The main shopping mall in town is Macarthur Square.

From Sydney, take Metroad 1 (General Holmes Drive) continuing on Metroad 5 (M5 East Freeway) until the interchange with Narellan Road (Metroad 9), where you head east on Narellan Road into Campbelltown.
