Stawell is a small town in the Wimmera region in the central western part of Victoria, Australia. It has a population of around 6,000 people (2012 estimate).
Stawell is one of the towns that was born out of the gold rush of 1853. It was originally called Pleasant Creek, but was later renamed after Sir William Foster Stawell, the Chief Justice of Victoria.
When quartz gold was discovered in the Big Hill area, the population gravitated to the area, so much so that today, Stawell's commercial center is located there, with the Grampians mountains within view.
