Sydney Harbour National Park (GPS: -33.81756, 151.28968) is a national park preserving forested areas on the foreshores and outlying islands of Sydney Harbour. The national park was created bit by bit as environmental awareness grew. By then much of the harbour foreshores had been taken over by residential development.

The idea of establishing a national park, to protect what natural space was left, was first mooted by Neil Nielsen, who later became the Minister for Lands of New South Wales. At that time, the very concept of a "national park" was new. Eventually however, the public bought into Nielsen's concept, and the government of New South Wales began buying up land around the foreshore of the harbour in 1965.

Sydney Harbour National Park was gazetted in 1975. More areas were added to it in 1978, 1979 and 1984. Among the areas included in the national park are Bradleys Head, Clark Island, Dobroyd Head, Fort Denison, Goat Island, Middle Head, Nielsen Park, Rodd Island, Shark Island and Sydney Heads (North Head and South Head).

Sydney Harbour National Park is on the Map of Sydney, Australia

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
