Woolloomooloo, Sydney
Woolloomooloo (GPS: -33.87264, 151.2185) is a harbourside suburb of
Sydney in the state of
New South Wales. it is located on the eastern side of the Sydney Central Business District.
Woolloomooloo was named after the first homestead that was established there, spellt Wolloomooloo House, owned by John Palmer. There is a suggestioin that the name could have been derived from
wallamullah, meaning "place of plenty", or
wallabahmullah, meaning "young black kangaroo". John Palmer received the land grant in 1793 allowing him to run cattle.
Today Woolloomooloo is mainly residential except for the harbourside, which has undergone urban renewal, and now features, among others, a boutique hotel, restaurants, bars, and upscale residences.
Sights in Woolloomooloo
Woolloomooloo Bay is the bay at Woolloomooloo, between Mrs Macquaries Point and Garden Island. At the centre of the bay is Finger Wharf, a now National Trust-listed heritage site which is one of the biggest wooden building in the world.
