Tamworth is a city in the New England region in northern New South Wales, Australia. The city of about 50,000 people (2012 estimate) is renowned nationally as the "Country Music Capital of Australia".

Tamworth is on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, the mountain range on the eastern side of Australia. The Peel River flows through the city, running southeast to northwest through it. Tamworth covers 486 sq km and includes surrounding towns such as Willow Tree, Nundle, Gunnedah and Uralla.

The area around Tamworth was the traditional home of the Kamilaroi people. The first European to pass through the area was surveyor John Oxley in 1818. Arriving at the Peel Valley, he described it as one of the finest and most ideal for European settlement. This led to the founding of sheet and cattle stations in the area.

Tamworth was granted city status in 1946. The following year it receives flight connections when East-West Airlines began services from Sydney. Tamworth's position as an Australian country music destination began in 1973, when the first such festival was staged. This has led to an annual Tamworth Country Music Festival held every summer. It is said to be the second largest country music festival in the world.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
