Traralgon is a city in the Latrobe Valley, in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It has a population of around 22,000 people (2012 estimate).

Sir Paul Edmund de Strzelecki was the first European to explore the Traralgon area following his return from the exploring the Snowy Mountains. He discovered that the Latrobe Valley was very fertile. This quickly attracted settlers to the area to establish dairy farms.

The town of Traralgon was founded in the early 1860s. A railway line connecting it to Melbourne was completed in 1877. It remained largely a farming town until the 1930s, when a paper mill was built there. In 1960, Trafalgon-born Sir Macfarlane Burnet became a joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

Today, much of historic Traralgon was been erased by modern development. Nevertheless some of the noted historic landmarks still stand today, among them the Post Office and Courthouse built in 1886, and Ryans Hotel built in 1914.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
