Orang Hock Rojak (23 August 2008)
Orang Hock Rojak (GPS: 5.36282, 100.46068), (
Penang Hokkien: Or3 Lang2 Lojak1; Traditional/Simplified Chinese: 黑人罗惹) is the oldest and most famous
rojak stall in the heart of
Bukit Mertajam town. The name translates literally as the "prosperous black man" rojak. It is located at
Restoran Chiap Hong, the green-coloured coffee shop at the intersection of
Jalan Bunga Raya with
Jalan Pasar.
Orang Hock Rojak is across Jalan Bunga Raya from the
Bukit Mertajam Pek Lang Rojak Stall (Penang Hokkien: Pek
3 Lang
2 Loh
1 Jak
1) and diagonally across is
Rojak Orang Hitam Putih (Penang Hokkien: Or
3 Pek
3 Lang
2 Loh
1 Jak
1). Together, these three rojak stalls monopolise the rojak business in the heart of town.
Which is the best? To be fair, I have only tried Orang Hock Rojak. According to my friend, a local, this is the best. I have not tried the others, but I have to say that Orang Hock Rojak is really good. It even sells its rojak sauce. However I found that rojak in Bukit Mertajam is surprisingly not cheap. But on the other hand, the portion is quite large compared to rojak on Penang Island.
