Pacific (17 December 2008)

Pacific Hypermarket & Department Store is a department store that opened to business in Komtar on 17 December 2008. Known simply as Pacific Komtar, occupies the premises that was left vacant when Super Komtar succumbed to internal problems.

The new Pacific Komtar store, which will be the new anchor tenant at Komtar, is positioned to target the middle and upper class market. Pacific invested RM20 million to develop and renovate the new outlet which is bordered by Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong and Jalan Ria, and is connected to Prangin Mall by the overhead pedestrian crossing.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that with the coming of Pacific to Penang Island, "we see the light at the end of the tunnel in reinstalling Komtar as the heart of George Town and Penang".

The debut of Pacific Komtar is notesworthy as an effort to bring back the sparkle to Komtar, which in the last few years has not only lost its luster - and business - it has also become symbolic with the past state government which was hemorrhaging ideas. Rather than doing what is necessary to make Komtar the urban centre, it allowed the structure to stick out like a "sore thumb" (realising a prediction of a foreign critic when the building was under construction), become a filthy squalor. Mr Lim promised that the present state government will not "run away from Komtar".
