The biggest Pasar Ramadhan food market in Penang is the one in Bayan Baru. It is a good place to see various Muslim food that would otherwise not be available in a big scale. Knowing that many people like to come to this Pasar Ramadhan, and so finding a place to park will be tough, we went early, around 3:30 pm. We found that even as early as that, most of the roadside parking lots were already taken, but we were luckily enough to get a place when a car vacated. It was on Lintang Mayang Pasir 4, just next to the Pasar Ramadhan.
Even at 3:30 pm, the Pasar Ramadhan was already in full swing. Most of the stalls were already operating during that time, and there was an air of festivity all around. Large crowds were already streaming into the compound adjacent to the Bayan Baru Mosque, both Muslims and non-Muslims, all eaget to shop of the tastiest Muslim fare.
My wife and I went around the Bayan Baru Pasar Ramadhan twice. The first time to check out the fare, the second time to shop. Oh yes, of course, there is so much to buy, so much to eat. There are several stalls selling the same item, particularly nasi tomato and murtabak, so we have to shop around to see which stall's food look nicest. At the rice stalls, we saw so many different delicious-looking dishes. I am more the impulsive buyer than my wife, who had to stop me from want to buy anything and everything within sight, knowing I couldn't possibly finish all the food otherwise.
For our dinner that evening, I bought tomato rice with a piece of chicken, which is in a form of dry curry at RM4.50. Then I also bought from the same stall a spicy chicken drumstick for RM3.00. So two pieces of chicken to go with my tomato rice. Meanwhile, my wife bought a murtabak and a samosa for herself. Then I saw some egg pudding and wanted to buy four pieces (at 80 sen each), but my wife vetoed the idea down to three pieces. Next, I saw some Malay leng chee kang (dessert drink) and bought a pack at RM3. Finally I saw some kuih sarang semut and bought two pieces (50 sen each), one for me and one for my wife. My wife stopped me from further shopping after that, knowing otherwise I will continue to buy and buy, finishing what I buy being a different story all together!
The tomato rice with the two pieces of chicken was delicious. At home, I discovered that my wife's murtabak came only with pickled onions, not the usual curry. Unfortunately I didn't have any curry to offer her either. We shared the leng chee kang and she eat one piece of the egg pudding as well as one kuih sarang semut. As she had expected, I couldn't finish my food, so I saved my piece of kuih sarang semut, which I had several hours later. I liked the egg pudding, though my wife pronounced that it could be better. Both of us agreed that the kuih sarang semut was not as tasty as the one my wife made herself. Nevertheless, all in all, we had a great time shopping and trying the food at the 2016 Bayan Baru Pasar Ramadhan.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
