Peel Avenue, George Town, Penang (30 June 2018)
Lebuhraya Peel, formerly
Peel Avenue, is a road in
George Town, Penang. It is one of the most stately avenues in the city. It runs from
Pangkor Road to Macalister Road, where it also joins
Codrington Avenue. Both Peel and Codrington avenues are planted with royal palms, giving them an air of grandeur.
William Peel
Peel Avenue was laid out in the early 20th century, when George Town was growing outwards into the suburbs. It was named after William Peel, the
Resident Councillor of Penang from 1925 to 1926.
Jalan Peel in Kuala Lumpur was also named after him.
Today, due to increased traffic, Peel Avenue is turned into a one-way street with traffic flowing from west to east. On reaching the intersection with Perak Road, one have to turn right or left, as there is no through access to Pangkor Road.
Getting to Peel Avenue
There are no bus stops along Peel Avenue, though
Rapid Penang Bus
304 passes through it. The nearest bus stop is on Macalister Road.
