Penang City Park (GPS: 5.42548, 100.30068; Malay: Taman Bandaraya Pulau Pinang) is a huge park at the edge of George Town, Penang. Until Penang Island was given city status, the park was known as the Penang Municipal Park (Taman Perbandaran Pulau Pinang), and before that, it was originally called Youth Park (Taman Belia).

The Penang City Park can be accessed via a single one-way route, entering through Persiaran Kuari. This park was created in the early 1970s from a quarry land to provide a recreational space for youths. In its earliest incarnation, the Youth Park as it was called at that time, the authorities built a skating rink (which is still there) and an outdoor auditorium. There is also a place for archery and hiking. Since then, the park has been beautified and added to numerous times.

Over the years, as more funds were allocated to increase recreational opportunities for the public, more facilities were added to the park. Now, it also has a water park complete with fountains of various sizes and a cascade of pools.

Penang City Park is managed by the Penang Island City Council, or Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang, the council that looks after the whole island. In addition to this park, the city council also manages the Metropolitan Park in Relau.

Water Park

A fun place for kids to play with water, the water park at the Penang City Park has a variety of water sprouts and fountains, a good way to cool off on a hot day. This area can get quite crowded during the weekends.

Super Trees

Resembling the Super Trees at Singapore's Gardens By The Bay, these rattan sculptures in the public grounds of the Penang City Park are much smaller in size.

Roller-Skating Rink

Roller-skating was extremely popular in the early 1970s, when the park was created. This is one of the earliest facilities at the park.

Reflexology Paths

As reflexology becomes popular, particularly among the senior population, a number of reflexology paths were built, some of which sponsored by corporate bodies, social clubs and even private individuals.

Penang City Park Street Art

To provide canvas for expression, the state is allowing people to paint on seven specially erected walls any form of art they so desire. Perhaps as a way to spearhead the project, a three-dimensional floor mural was installed at the playground of the park.
