The Penang Education Department (Jabatan Pelajaran Pulau Pinang) occupies a new 5-storey building along Jalan Bukit Gambir, in Bukit Jambul, Penang. The department is headed by a director and assisted by a deputy director.
The Penang Education Department overseas education in the state with its responsibilities carried out under different sectors including school, human development, Islamic education, private-sector education, academic management, examinations and assessment, psychology and counselling, quality assurance, management services and development, information management and information technology and communication. Its responsibilities are different to that of the Education Office.
The Penang Education Department was established in 1960 and originally occupied the premises of Hutching Secondary School. From there it relocated to Levels 3 & 4 of Bangunan Tuanku Syed Putra. The department first moved to its present site along Jalan Bukit Gambir in 2004. The newest block of the education department was completed in early 2013.
