Penang Institute (GPS: 5.43021, 100.30449), formerly known as SERI (Socio-Economic and Environment Research Institute) is a Penang-based research institute established in 1997. The institute is housed at a double-storey government bungalow along Brown Road.

Among the projects undertaken by Penang Institute includes public lectures, a environmental project (ie recycling), socio-economic studies, and others. The publication arm of SERI produces the Penang Economic Month, a 64-page magazine that looks into the issues affecting Penang. It also produces the Penang Economic Outlook report, an annual report providing a view of the health of Penang's economic sectors.
