Galeri Melayu Pulau Pinang (9 January 2016)
Penang Malay Gallery (GPS: 5.42182, 100.32793), or
Galeri Melayu Pulau Pinang, is a cultural museum showcasing the history and culture of the Malays in Penang. Housed at
Rumah Teh Bunga on
Hutton Lane, it finally opened to the public in December, 2015. The gallery occupies the lower and upper floor of the mansion.
As you explore the Penang Malay Gallery, you are introduced to the history of the Malay settlement of Penang Island. You get to know the early Malay arrivals at various parts of the island and learn who were the pioneers who established the various Malay villages. Different galleries showcases the trading activities, religion, customs, jewellery and way of life of Penang Malays.
The earliest of these Malay pioneers to establish a settlement on Penang Island was Nakhoda Intan, also known as Haji Mohammad Salleh or Raja Nan Intan ibni al-Marhum Tengku Pateh Sebatang, who obtained the consent of the Sultan of Kedah to establish a settlement on the eastern shore of Penang Island around 1730. This settlement developed into the village of
Batu Uban. The settlement is said to been expanded all the way to
Tanjung Penaga (the location of Fort Point during the time of early British settlement) by his brother, the Nakhoda Kecil.
