Penang Port Building (3 January 2020)
Penang Port Building is a modern-style 4-storey building along
Pesara King Edward, in
George Town, Penang. It is the offices of Penang Port Sdn Bhd, which was known as the Penang Port Commission until 1 January, 1994, when the port was privatized to become a government-owned entity under the Ministry of Finance Inc. Going further back in time, the Penang Port Commission was established on 1 January, 1956 in a statutory body under the Penang Port Commission Act 1955.
Penang Port Building sits on reclaimed land. Land reclamation here happened in two phases. The earlier one was in 1804-05, when
Fort Cornwallis was repaired and the shore extended out, creating space of the construction of Fort Pier, also called Kedah Pier. The later reclamation, at the end of the 19th century, created land for the godowns, some of which are still standing today.
The Penang Port Building has an arcade that wraps from Pesara King Edward to
Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah. The arcade houses a Tourist Information Centre. There are also shops here where you can book tours and ferry tickets for trips to
Langkawi and
Medan.
