Penang Smart Parking is an app-based parking system that was introduced to Penang on 19 August, 2019. It replaces the use of parking coupons, which will be gradually phased out and become obsolete after 31 December 2020. This parking facility covers some 36,000 parking lots owned by the Penang State Government through the Penang Island City Council and the Seberang Perai City Council.
Parking Fees
As of 1 January, 2020, the parking fees on Penang Island is 40 sen for every half an hour, and on Seberang Perai, 40 sen for every hour. Parking fees are chargeable from 8:00am to 6:00pm, Mondays to Saturdays. Parking is free on Sundays and on public holidays.
Everywhere in Penang, and especially in George Town, you can find signages like the one shown below stating the required parking charges.

How to make use of Penang Smart Parking App
1. Download the App from Google Play or AppStore, or get an eKUPON from a nearby agent. You can also scan the following QR codes:
2. The first time you launch the app, you are requested to sign up by providing your phone number and create an 8-digit login password.
3. The main page of the app looks like this.
4. If you click on the functions button on the top left, you can open a menu that looks like this.
From this menu, select to register your vehicle. This is important, so that your parking payment can be matched to the right vehicle.
5. Before you can start using the app for the first time, you need to have enough balance to pay for your parking. You need to prepay in advance. To do that, you need to load some money into your account. Click the reload button on the bottom right on the main page. That takes you to this page:
This takes you to Options.
Click Option, and you are presented with various amounts, the minimum being RM10.
Next choose the payment channel, that means, whether from your credit card, bank transfer, or any other methods.
6. To pay for your parking, click the Park n Pay button.
7. Pick the parking duration, either whole day or by lots of 30 minutes or 1 hour.
There is an expiry alert button that will buzz to alert you to top up before the time runs out. Parking charges begin running the moment you press okay.
For those without a Smart Phone
For the convenience of visitors as well as those without a smart phone, they can get in touch with an eKupon agent nearby to pay their parking. The eKupon is similar to the existing parking coupons, but is in online format. The list of eKupon agents are shown below.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
