Perak Road Malay Cemetery (15 December 2008)

The
Perak Road Malay Cemetery (GPS: 5.40753, 100.31532), also called the
Perak Road Muslim Burial Ground or
Tanah Perkuburan Islam Jalan Perak is the biggest Malay cemetery in Penang. It is located beside
Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahaya on
Perak Road, and may have been set aside by the founder of the mosque for Muslim burial. As is the Muslim custom, burials are done one on top of the other, with the same grave used to bury subsequent members of the same family. In order to achieve that, the first burial had to be the deepest, at about ten feet down, and subsequent one about a foot above it. In that way, none of the remains are disturbed.
Within this cemetery are mausoleums to noted Muslim personalities from the earlier centuries, including Sheikh Abdul Ghani of Madura, the religious teacher who was instrumental in the establishment of
Masjid Maqbul and
Masjid Tuan Guru.
