Permatang Damar Laut Coastal Pillboxes (GPS: 5.28001, 100.25684 and 5.27864, 100.26002) are small fortifications that were erected along the coast of Permatang Damar Laut, on the southern part of Penang Island. I have so far discovered two, and I believe there could be more. There pillboxes are built to face the sea. They are located right on the coast.
Of the two pillboxes that I come across, one of them is in an advanced state of disrepair, and appear like it might recede with the tide into the sea at any time at all. It is located next to a disused pier that is also much broken down.
The other pillbox along the Permatang Damar Laut coast that I have found is still quite well preserved. It is right behind the fence of the Penang International Airport. The area is sandwiched between the airport perimeters and the shore itself.
I do not have any information over who built the two pillboxes that I have come across. As they appear to be different from the rounded pillboxes built by the British, I guess that these might have been built by the Japanese to defend the coast from Allied Forces. But this is just a guess, and I would need more details to verify this matter.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
