Cebu Island is a long, narrow island in the heart of the Visayan archipelago, in the Philippines. It covers 4,468 sq km (1,725 sq km) and has a population of 3.9 million people (2011 estimate). It is one of the more densely populated island within the Visayan group, and location of Cebu City, the third largest city in the Philippines.

Main Cities of Cebu Province

  1. Cebu City
    Biggest city in Cebu Island and Cebu Province, and third largest city in the Philippines.

  2. Danao City
    City on the central-eastern coast of Cebu Island, noted for its gun-making industry.

  3. Lapu-Lapu City
    City on Mactan Island and part of mainland Cebu Island, named after the local chieftain who defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.

  4. Mandaue City
    City facing Mactan island where Lapu-Lapu City is located.

  5. Moalboal
    City in southwestern Cebu Island famous as a beach destination.

  6. Talisay City
    City within the Cebu City metropolitan area, famous for its roasted pig local delicacy.

From Cebu Island, Negros is to the west, Leyte to the northeast, and Bohol to the southeast. Cebu Island measures 225 km (140 mi) from end to end. It is administered as Cebu Province, which is part of the Central Visayas Region. Cebu Province includes the surrounding islands, numbering 167 in all. Together the population of Cebu Province is 2.4 million people.

Cebu Island is remembered as the site where Portuguese-born explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed by the troops of Lapu-Lapu, the local chieftain. Memorials to both men are found in Lapu-Lapu City.

The people of Cebu Island speak Cebuano Visayan, a language of Malayo-Polynesian origin. Although Tagalog is not a local tongue, it is popularly spoken and understood, as is English.

How to go to Cebu Island

There are regular flights connecting Cebu City with Manila and most of the other major cities of the Philippines. Ferry services are also available between Cebu Island and the other islands of the Visayas group.
