Piccadilly Bazaar, Kuala Kangsar Road (25 January 2013)
Piccadilly Bazaar (GPS: 5.41813, 100.33253) is a venue for buying inexpensive items in
George Town, Penang. Fronting
Kuala Kangsar Road, it is continuous to the
Penang Bazaar, which faces Penang Road. It was named after Piccadilly, a major shopping street in London.
Before shopping malls become commonplace in Penang, bazaars were the main place to go shopping in Penang. It attracted not only local shoppers but those from neighbouring states as well as visitors disembarking from the ships at
Swettenham Pier and
Victoria Pier. Piccadilly Bazaar was all the rage among shoppers in the mid 20th century.
By the 1970's, Piccadilly Bazaar was beginning to lose its lustre, as the first of the air-conditioned department stores make their appearance in Penang. Over time, its clientele receded to only those of the working class. Today the bazaar continues to function, its frontage being a coffee shop that serves mostly the people going to the open air market along Kuala Kangsar Road.
