Piccadilly Circus, George Town, PenangPiccadilly Circus, George Town, Penang (18 February 2013)

Piccadilly Circus (GPS: 5.42213, 100.31289) is a former roundabout in George Town, Penang. Named after Piccadilly Circus in London, it was where Macalister Road meets Residency Road, Codrington Avenue and Peel Avenue. Located beside the roundabout is the Baobab tree which was planted by Captain Speedy in 1871, and is still standing today.

Piccadilly Circus has since been dismantled. In its place is a set of cross roads. Eastbound traffic on Macalister Road continues to Peel Avenue while westbound traffic on Macalister Road continues on Residency Road. Traffic heading south from Codrington Avenue may either turn left to Peel Avenue, or cross the intersection of Macalister Road to Residency Road. Through-drives are also added to enable direct traffic flow for eastbound traffic on Macalister Road to continue to Residency Road, and westbound traffic on Macalister Road to enter Peel Avenue.

In the last few years, the site of Piccadilly Circus has been landscaped. Today the lawn is well maintained. There are fountains. Unfortunately at the time of my visit, the main fountain does not seem to be working.

Updates

June 2015: After just over a year in existence, the roundabout put up by the city council was torn down and replaced with a new set of traffic lights once again. Traffic from Macalister Road has uninterrupted flow to Residency Road. There is still a junction for the intersection between Macalister Road with Cordington Avenue and Peel Avenue.

28 September, 2013: A new roundabout has been created by the MPPP on the site of Piccadilly Circus, as part of the traffic dispersal system for Pulau Tikus.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
