Poh Beng Estate Durian Stall

Poh Beng Estate Durian Centre, Jalan Tengah (21 June 2016)


Poh Beng Estate (GPS: 5.32091, 100.2806) is a durian estate in Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. To make it easier for customers to buy their durians, they have been selling it at their durian stall along Jalan Tengah, in Bayan Baru.

I visited the Poh Beng Estate durian stall in the company of Lindsay Gasik, who I got to know last year. Lindsay is working on her book on Penang durians, and suggested that we visit this stall together.

We met the owner, Mr Chang Boon Beng, who turns out to the an older brother to Durian Seng of the popular Bao Sheng Durian Farm. As I soon learned, the father had many children, at least four of whom are in the durian trade.

Lindsay Gasik is more a durian expert than I am. At the stall, she had no trouble identifying the different types of durian. She could tell immediately the type of durian based on its appearance. I am pretty bad at remembering the various durians (so I always have to record it down somewhere and file it away), but I do recall that the first durian we ate at Poh Beng Estate stall was the Ang3 Haeh2 (or "red prawn"). Other branded durians available there include the Hor3 Lor2 and the Khun1 Poh2 Ang3 Bak3.

We had a very nice time trying out the various durians - or at least, I am the one doing the trying, for Lindsay could quickly identify what durian we were eating.
