When it was first built, the Prai Market is one of the biggest market in Penang. However, by the turn of the 21st century, it has become someone run down.
On 18 May, 2015,
The Star reported that a developer had demolished the market building despite a stop-work order placed against it. According to Deputy Chief Minister (II) Dr P. Ramasamy, who is the Prai state assemblyman, the company obtained vacant possession of the market from the court in June 2014, but had yet to receive approval to carry out the demolition work.
The president of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif, said that the council is preparing the documents to charge the landowner-cum-developer for having town down the market building.
