Prai River Swing Bridge (11 September 2015)
Prai River Swing Bridge (GPS: 5.38673, 100.37474) is a railway bridge across the
Prai River in
Prai, Penang. It was built in such a way so that the bridge can turn sideways whenever needed, to allow large ships to pass through.
The Prai River Swing Bridge was originally constructed in 1964 by the Austrian bridge-building company Waagner-Biro. It can rotate on one axis moving 1,100 tonnes of steel, to allow a passage for ships to pass through. When the line was electrified in 2013 for the Electric Train Service, Malayan Railway (KTMB) once again called upon Waagner-Biro to replace the bridge.
The new Prai River Swing Bridge is a double-track bridge with a length of 90 meters, comprising two 45-meter cantilevers attached to a central pier. It can enable trains to pass through at a speed of 60 kilometers per hours. The bridge is powered by a electro-hydrolic drive that can allow it to turn 73° so that boats can pass through.
