Prangin Heritage Square (19 March 2010)

The
Prangin Heritage Square is an urban conservation project to transform the
Prangin Canal area into a new heritage enclave for
George Town, Penang. The site covers a 1.82-hectare area, and is bounded by
Prangin Road,
Carnarvon Street,
Magazine Road and Beach Street. It includes the cast-iron structure that once house the
Sia Boey Market 
.
The Prangin Heritage Square project was announced by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on 1 August, 2012, when he visited the site. It is undertaken as part of Phase V of the
Komtar urban redevelopment programme. The project will include the preservation of the
Sia Boey Market Building, the shophouses along
Maxwell Road and the clean-up of
Prangin Canal.

The Prangin Heritage Square project is intended to bring life and vibrance to this once run-down part of George Town. The shophouses along Maxwell Road will house cafés, teahouses, craft shops and souvenir shops. Also in the plan is the setting up of a street food area and general landscaping.

From
Komtar Bus Terminal, walk east along
Tek Soon Street to reach the Prangin Heritage Square.
