Sheikh Tahir Observatory (17 April 2004)
Sheikh Tahir Observatory (GPS: 5.41144, 100.19672), or
Pusat Falak Sheikh Tahir, is an Islamic astronomical centre located along the road to
Pantai Acheh on the west coast of Penang. It was named in honour of Sheikh Muhammad Tahir Jalaluddin, a famous Muslim astronomer of the Malay archipelago.
Sheikh Tahir passed away at the age of 87 on 26 October 1956 and was buried at the Jalan Baru Cemetery in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. His fifth son, Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir, was made the governor, or Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang State
The Sheikh Tahir Observatory is one of the places where the moon is observed for the announcement of the Hari Raya Puasa.

Getting there
Sheikh Tahir Observatory is located along Jalan Pantai Acheh. As you go along the road in the direction of Kampung Pantai Acheh, you will arrive at the observatory which is on the right side of the road.
