Pykett Methodist School (19 March 2009)
Pykett Methodist School, or
Sekolah Kebangsaan Pykett Methodist, is a primary school in
George Town, Penang. It occupies a plot of land between Westland Road and Burmah Road, and is also bordered by Pykett Avenue, which was previously known as Westland Avenue. Pykett Methodist School is a spin-off from Anglo-Chinese School, and was named after Methodist missionary G.F. Pykett, who was the highly instrumental in the growth of education in Penang.
The site on Pykett Avenue had been in use as site for the Anglo-Chinese School as early as 1931, when the secondary school was located there. The site originally belonged to the Khoo Kongsi and the Khaw family, under Khaw Joo Cjie
1. It was purchased from its previous owners in 1947.
In 1956, the name Anglo-Chinese School Penang is thought to be a misnomer, and henceforth the secondary school became known as Methodist Boys School while the primary school became known as Pykett Methodist School
1.
Since the turn of the 21st century, Pykett Methodist School has seen its student intake continue to dwindle, so much so that by 2010, Sekolah Kebangsaan Pykett Methodist has a total student enrolment of only 200 pupils
2. After the 3.38-acre land across from the school was sold by Khaw Bian Cheng Sdn Bhd to developer Mah Sing Group for RM38.65 million, there was speculation that the Methodist Church may also sell off the property for re-development.
