Rain Garden, Jalan Jeti Lama, Butterworth (11 December 2017)
Rain Garden (GPS: 5.41251, 100.37081) is an urban park in
Bagan Luar,
Butterworth. It occupies part of a car park between
Jalan Pasar and
Jalan Jeti Lama, in front of the
Maha Mariamman Temple.
The Rain Garden got its name because it serves as a place to collect runoffs that would otherwise flood over impervious urban surfaces such as the nearby car park. It has a pond planted with wetland plants that are tolerant of the tropical climate. These plants serve as part of a bio-retention system that reduces the amount of pollutants which would otherwise leech into the drains.
Rain Garden was built at a cost of RM343,918, of which RM100,000 was paid by the state government while the balance by ThinkCity. The park was completed in December 2017. It is now under the management of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council.
