Rejimen 509 Askar Wataniah (30 June 2018)
Rejimen 509 Askar Wataniah (GPS: 5.42367, 100.31649) is a military reserve base under the Department of Civil Defence, in
George Town, Penang. Its base occupies the site bordered by
Jalan Perak and
Lebuhraya Peel. It was created to train and foster interest within the public to join the army as military reservist. The regiment helps to recruit and train local who are eligible to join the Malaysian Armed Forces, for the benefit of the state and the nation.
The Rejimen Askar Wataniah, or Territorial Army Regiment, traces its history to 1861, when the Penang Volunteers force was formed. All the territorial regiments in the country follow a three-digit series beginning with a "5", with the one in George Town being Regimen 509.
