BS Duck Boss, Nibong Tebal (10 October 2020)
BS Duck Boss (GPS: 5.1684, 100.48931; Chinese: 鸭老板) is a roast duck restaurant in
Nibong Tebal, Penang. It occupies a shophouse at Lorong Bukit Panchor in Taman Belatok. The shop was opened by two partners who invited my wife and me over to try out their food. Their shop reflects Nibong Tebal's role as a major producer of ducks.
The signature item at BS Duck Boss is their Guinness Stout Duck. This dish has to be ordered a day in advance, for it requires marinating the duck in Guinness Stout overnight. When you enjoy this dish, you can detect the aroma of the stout in the meat. The skin has been roasted to a golden brown. The Guinness Stout Duck was personally created by the proprietors of BS Duck Boss through numerous taste tests.
One item we did not get to try on that day, is the Cantonese Traditional Charcoal Roasted Duck. This delicacy is based on recipe handed down by the late grandfather of one of the present partners in the shop, Mr Khor Shi Rong. The dish uses locally raised ducks weighing around 2.4kg. They are cleaned and marinated overnight in a mix of Chinese herbs, and then left to dry for at least six hours before being roasted over charcoal for between one to one and a half hours.
The second item which was served to us was the Charcoal Roasted Pi Pa Duck. A favourite among many, the locally raised ducks. Similar to the recipe for the Cantonese Traditional Charcoal Roasted Duck, the ducks are cleaned and marinated overnight in various Chinese herbs, left to dry for at least six hours and then roasted for one to one and a half hours. It is cut up and served with a drenching of a special homemade sweet paste that enhances the taste of the Pi Pa Duck.
In addition to Guinness Stout Duck, Pipa Duck and Cantonese Traditional Charcoal Roasted Duck, the shop also serves Roast Pork (Sio Bak), and Barbecued Pork (Char Sio).
