Restoran Aik HoeRestoran Aik Hoe (8 February 2013)

Restoran Aik Hoe (GPS: 5.41785, 100.33604) is a Chinese dim sum restaurant at Carnarvon Street in George Town, Penang. It is usually operating in the morning, and offers various types of dim sum. This restaurant offers the old-world style of dim sum.

Restoran Aik Hoe operates everyday except Monday, from 5:30 am in the morning and until lunch time.

Tim's Taste Test

11 October, 2014
My wife and I visited Restoran Aik Hoe for the first time, to try out its dim sum. The restaurant occupies two adjoining shophouses. From its deco, it appears that the restaurant has been around for decades. It is like those old-style kopitiam, except that it is a dim sum restaurant, which is more or less the same time.

Restoran Aik Hoe has quite a number of dim sum items (see here list of dim sum dishes in Penang Hokkien). Compared to some of the newer dim sum restaurants, the choices here appear also more "old fashioned". There is less use of prawns compared to over there.

Here's everything we ordered. The dishes do look good, don't they?

In addition to the dim sum dishes, we also ordered one plate of sar hor fun, and for drinks, we ordered chrysanthemum tea.

On the whole, we found the dim sum here to be passable only. The chai1 thau3 koay4 (bottom centre) is not as crispy as how we would want it to be. The lo3 han1 cai1 (bottom left) has crispy skin, but the filling is not that much. The char1 sio1-filled yam balls (centre left) should be crispier.

As for the sar hor fun, yes, it does have the sar hor fun aroma. But as we progressed into eating it, again we found that it is only passable.

Finally, the char1 sio3 pau1 (bottom right) is tiny, and quite adorable. When we broke it into two, we saw that the skin was also quite thick. We would prefer thinner skin with more filling.

On the whole, I can say the dim sum here is "boleh tahan lah", but I haven't found something that I would particularly rave about.

The bill came to RM28.20 for two persons. Looking at other tables, we believe we ordered more items for two persons compared to others, many of whom ordered just two or three dim sum dishes. (Mana cukup nak makan?) Others filled themselves with the noodle dishes. At the price we paid, I can't say this is cheap, considering the quality of ingredients.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
