Cititel's Chef's Signature Buffet

Chef's Signature BuffetChef's Signature Buffet, Cititel Penang (8 September 2016)

Cititel's Chef's Signature Buffet is a buffet dinner at Cititel Penang. My wife and I joined a few other Penang food bloggers to a review of this spread. The buffet comprises a salad bar, an Asian appetizer bar, various seafood on ice, soups, main courses and Japanese items at the carving station.

As is usually the case for me, I headed for the carving station first. There is a chef here to cut of us sashimi slices, of salmon, tuna and butterfish. There is also a table with various types of sushi and maki spread out to form a beautiful circular design.

The second item which I like very much is the fish head curry. Cititel's fish head curry is cooked using salmon head, which unusual but absolutely delicious. This tastes very well with the lotus leaf rice. Often the simpliest things in life are the tastiest. My wife told me that the rojak was very good, particularly due to the rojak sauce. I only had one piece of it, from her plate, as I was too full, with so many other things to eat.

The "so many other things" that I enjoyed that evening included Hainanese spring rolls, deep-fried belacan chicken, roasted duck, deep-fried prawns with spiced salt and pepper.

I have to honestly tell you that there are more items than I could consume. I did not touch anything from the salad bar (it has shredded carrot, sliced cucumber, onion rings, julienne capsicum, olives, cherry tomatoes, corn kernel, and come with nine different dressings!) I didn't have space for soup either. There were two types that evening, namely the double-boiled fish maw soup with chicken meat balls and cream of mushroom soup, to be taken with bread rolls, whole breads and butter.

There were also main course items which I did not have chance to eat. Oh yes, there's the very lovely looking Nyonya style chili crab. It looks so delicious, but I felt it was too troublesome to eat crabs. But if you love crabs, you've gotta try it here.

I did enjoy the desserts, and there's a whole lot to choose from. There's green tea cheesecake, assorted pastries, crème caramel, Japanese rice balls, sweetened redbean puree, red velvet cake. Again, there are a lot of items which I couldn't eat, because stomach space is limited! How I wish I could take a nap, wake up, and eat some more!

On top of enjoying the buffet, my wife and I had a good time meeting up with the local food bloggers, among them there's Jack Guan and Barry Boi, whom we've met before, and then there's also Wendy Wong, who maintains a Chinese-language blog. All in all, I had a wonderful evening, and I thank Cititel Penang for having invited us to the Chef's Signature Buffet.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
