Dinner at Granny's Cottage, Gurney Plaza

My wife and I were thrilled to be invited back to dinner at Wai Po Jia Granny's Cottage 外婆家, a restaurant serving authentic Penang homecooked food, at Gurney Plaza, Penang. The restaurant has just completed a full makeover (a requirement by the shopping mall after they finished a 5-year contract). As a result, the restaurant now has an entirely new look.

The walls of Granny's Cottage is decked with memorabilia of yesteryear. There are framed pieces of tiles similar to those you would find in George Town prewar townhouses. On one corner, the owner displays a collection of antique plates that are over half a century old. There is also a pair of window shutters, now nicely repainted, hanged on the wall. It is at least 80 years old.

We had a lovely dinner that could have passed as something from a homecook kitchen. They include Pork Trotter with Vinegar, French Bean with Minced Pork, Spring Rolls, Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Cutlets, Deep-fried Pork Fillet with Red Fermented Beancurd and Radish Pork Rib Soup. For the dessert, we had Hot Soya Milk with Rice Balls and Iced Aiyu Jelly. The meal was so tasty, that I finished a second helping of rice.

It was truly a lovely dinner. If you would enjoy Penang's popular home dishes, you are going to enjoy a trip to Granny's Cottage. Now let me show you what we had.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
