Do you know that Touch 'n Go is gradually phasing out the use of SmartTAG, and replacing it with RFID (radio frequency identification) since January 2019? With the improvement in technology, it is now necessary for us to use a system that is more sophisticated. With RFID, you are able to reload from your credit card or debit card directly to your digital wallet, the Touch 'n Go eWallet, and not have to visit a kiosk to reload your card. You credit balance in the Touch 'n Go eWallet can be used not only to pay for tolls, but also for shopping.
This new system uses a sticker with the embedded RF chip which is pasted on the headlights of the vehicle. This sticker is linked to the Touch 'n Go eWallet, which gives you the ability to monitor your toll charges for up to 90 days.
In line with the plans to replace SmartTAG with RFID, Touch 'n Go no longer sells SmartTAG devices.
Step by Step towards getting RFID for your vehicle
Now that you know what is RFID, the next step is to get it for your vehicle. To do that, you have to bring your vehicle, along with its registration certificate (Sijil Pemilikan Kenderaan, aka the Geran), and photocopy of your identity card (front and back) to one of the fitment centres, which are usually located at a hypermarket nearby. Nevertheless, according to a statement by Touch 'n Go, documents are no longer needed. If you do not yet have Touch 'n Go eWallet, that would be applied for you on the spot.
Bagi pengetahuan anda, Touch 'n Go eWallet berlainan dengan kad Touch 'n Go anda, tetapi nilai pada kad Touch 'n Go dapat dihubungkan kepada eWallet agar, sekiranya nilai pada eWallet tidak mencukupi, maka bayaran tol dapat diambil terus daripada kad Touch 'n Go anda.
The Touch 'n Go eWallet is not your Touch 'n Go stored value card. However, you can link your Touch 'n Go card to the eWallet, so that in case there is insufficient funds in your eWallet, your toll charges will be taken directly from your card.
The Touch 'n Go eWallet is an App-based digital wallet or online service that allows you to make electronic transactions. As with a physical wallet, it holds cash, but in digital form. You would deposit funds into your Touch 'n Go eWallet in order to pay for various transactions, including expressway tolls.)

RFID is operational on the Penang Bridge. However, users have to pay a toll of RM7 when using it, instead of RM5.60 using SmartTAG.
List of locations to fit RFID
The following are places where you can get RFID fitted to your vehicle. In all these places, application for RFID is done indoors, and then the personnel will go with you to your vehicle to paste the RFID sticker to your car. You need that sticker to pass through the MyRFID gates at toll booths.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
