Risen Christ Catholic Church

Risen Christ Catholic ChurchRisen Christ Catholic Church (4 June 2011)

Risen Christ Catholic Church (GPS: 5.40436, 100.28196) is a church along Jalan Air Itam in Penang. It is located diagonally opposite the Anglican Christ Church along the same road.

The history of the Risen Christ Catholic Church goes back to 1968, when Bishop Gregory Yong acted to purchase a plot of land in the Air Itam area. The site had a wooden house on it. The house was used as a place of worship for the Catholic community of Air Itam. The first parish priest of the church was Father Jean Tavennec, from the French Catholic missionary organisation, Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris, or M.E.P.

In 1978, a two-storey church building for the Risen Christ Church was completed, and blessed by Bishop Soter Fernandez on Easter Sunday. The building housed the presbytery and meeting room along with the church itself. Over the years, the church continued to grow, adding to it properties in the neighbouring sites including plots behind the church in 1988, and the bungalow next to it in 2003.

The present church building dates from recent renovations carried out from 27 September, 2009. The building was completed in about a year and was dedicated on 1 January, 2011 by Bishop Antony Selvanayagam.
