Ryokan Muntri Boutique Hostel (GPS: 5.42028, 100.33527) is a 2-star guesthouse in George Town, Penang. It is housed in a double-storey shophouse on Muntri Street in George Town, Penang. The hostel offers a 4-bed dormitory, a 6-bed dormitory, a 4-bed female-only dormitory, a 6-bed with bathroom dormitory, and a private suite. On the ground floor is a cafe and bar.

Ryokan Muntri Boutique Hostel makes it possible for people to visit Penang on a budget, and yet still get to enjoy quality accommodation that is so comfortable. A bed at Ryokan Muntri starts as low as thirty-something ringgit, and for that price, you get to enjoy a clean, comfortable hostel that is fully air conditioned, with a cafe downstairs.



Initially, I had thought I was going to review only mainstream hotels. Then I realise that readers of Penang Travel Tips cover the whole spectrum, and they include budget travelers looking for budget accommodation. With that in mind, I widened my review to include budget accommodation too.

One of those that I have reviewed is this one, Ryokan Muntri. As I explore this budget hotel, I am instantly reminded that the days of dingy budget accommodation has been left in the past. I found that Ryokan Muntri is clean, neat and well maintained. There is a nice cafe on the ground floor. It has an excellent location along Muntri Street, so budget travelers is within walking distance of many of George Town's World Heritage Sites.

Ryokan Muntri offers rooms as well as beds in dormitories. I only peeked into the living quarters and did not take any photos, because most of them are occupied by guests. As of 27 Feb, 2017, a check on Agoda shows that rooms are going for RM119 without breakfast, and RM138 with breakfast. For travelers on a shoe string budget, beds range in price from RM27 in the mixed dorm no breakfast to RM44 in the 6-bedded en-suite dorm with breakfast.

For budget travelers looking for accommodation along Muntri Street, I am comfortable to recommend Ryokan Muntri.

What are the facilities at Ryokan?

Facilities at Ryokan Muntri include air-conditioning, personal in-room locker, towel and bed light. On the ground floor is the cafe and bar. There is also a cosy corner where guests can do some reading or play carom.

From the Weld Quay Ferry & Bus Terminal, take the CAT Free Shuttle Bus to Penang Road, alighting at Bus Stop 7 (St Francis Xavier Bus Stop). From Penang Road, walk down Muntri Street and you will arrive at Ryokan Chic Hostels on your left.
