The Hakka farmers of Balik Pulau were descendents of refugees of the failed Taiping Rebellion, a 19th century Chinese version of the Khmer Rouge whose leader practised a self-styled form of Christianity and ruled with an iron fist through fear and brutality. It gripped southern China from 1850 to 1864 but was eventually wiped out by the Qing Imperial Army.
