Schiffmann Herr Building, Weld Quay

Schiffmann Herr Building, Weld Quay, George Town, Penang (14 November 2012)

The Schiffmann Herr Building at No. 4 Weld Quay is one of the historic trading houses in George Town, Penang. It was built by Schiffmann, Herr & Co, a German trading company in 1891, following land reclamation that extended the shoreline for the laying out of Weld Quay. The company dealt in the import and export business, as with its neighbours on the same row. It is located between the Behn Meyer Building to its left and Behr Building to its right.

The Schiffmann Herr Building housed the heritage campus of the Institute of Training and Development until recently. At time of writing (Jan 2013), it has just undergone restoration and is not yet reoccupied. Its significance in the history of the German community in George Town makes it one of the sites within the German Heritage Trail of George Town.
