Seawind Beach Cafe, Tanjong TokongSeawind Beach Cafe, Tanjong Tokong (2 November 2013)

Seawind Beach Cafe (GPS: 5.46386, 100.30585) is a seaside restaurant in Tanjong Tokong, Penang. It occupies the compound of the bungalow which serves as a guesthouse, the Seawind Beach Motel. Just when I thought all my favourite restaurants were declining in quality, my wife and I were invited to a dinner here, and this restaurant has quickly become one of my new favourites.

Seawind Beach Cafe is located on Jalan C.M. Hashim. It is on the lane beside Hotel Sentral Seaview. The lane has two restaurants - New Dragon Gate facing Jalan C.M Hashim, and Seawind Beach Cafe facing the sea.

It was such a nice, homey place. There are deck chairs arranged along the front compound, so that you can enjoy the sea breeze. The compound is so close to the seashore, that you can hear the waves coming in. When we arrived, we saw that quite a number of diners have also taken spots near the shore, to enjoy the view and the breeze.

We were invited to dinner here by Mr Sunny Chan, the general manager (he told me he didn't quite know what his title is, but considering he is not the owner but one who takes charge of just about anything, I call him the "general manager"). We were introduced to the chef, Mr Moeed (I need to reconfirm with Mr Chan how to spell his name). Mr Moeed is from Pakistan - he is probably the first Pakistani I have ever met in Penang.

Many of the dishes we ate that evening are their own creation. The hut behind me is the place where they do their "r & d" of dishes before adding them to the menu.

In fact both Mr Chan and Mr Moeed are accomplished cooks, however, considering there is already a chef, Mr Chan takes on the other responsibilities. Many of the dishes in the menu are the creation of these two men. Rather than serving the run-of-the-mill fare, Seawind Beach Cafe decides to create dishes that are unique to it.

As soon as we arrived, we were served Thai-style Fried Tilapia in Crispy Garlic and Tumeric. The fish, which has been deep fried is buried in crispy garlic which is fried with tumeric. It was absolutely delicious. I could eat the crispy garlic on its own! According to Mr Chan, getting the garlic to be so tasty requires special skill and care over the intensity of the fire. Otherwise the garlic will blacken and become bitter. I am also glad that I have my wife with me. She is a very good cook too, and she loves to learn new techniques that she hasn't done before.

The next item we were given to try was Panzi Potato, a creation of Chef Moeed. This is potatoes baked with mozzarella cheese. I never knew potatoes could taste so good.

Following on that, we had the main course. I had the Sizzling Blue Steak while my wife the Chicken Mexicana. The steak was tender, and well done, which is how I like it.

By the time we finished the main course, my wife and I were full. But Mr Chan was not done. As mentioned, he also cooks. The next item he wanted us to try was the Thai-style Baked Prawns with Glass Noodles. For this, he invited us to his "R&D kitchen". Yup, Mr Chan has his own kitchen, away from the main kitchen. This is where they experimented with dishes before adding to the menu. So here he showed us how me prepared the Thai-style Baked Prawns with Glass Noodles.

By the time the prawn and glass noodle dish was ready, I was feeling very full. So, though it was tasty, I would have enjoyed it even more if I weren't so full.

And then came dessert! Oh, how I wish I am not that full. I had to stop eating for a while, so that whatever is in me has a chance to settle down. Dessert was Brownie and Walnut Cake with ice cream. Ah, so beautiful, but I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

It was certainly a lovely evening that we had, sitting there by the beach and listening to the waves, in Mr Chan's company, as he told us of his life experiences, and how he ended up running the restaurant. We are pleased to have found this restaurant and its good food, and we hope to come back from time to time.

Here's the menu, though we didn't actually do any ordering, except for the drinks. In addition to ordering à la carte, they also offer set dinners.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
