Secret Coffee Bear (GPS: 5.41718, 100.33568) is a little cafe along Campbell Street, in George Town, Penang. Located just across the road from the Campbell Street Market, it offers cakes and pastries from Secret of Baking, and set meals from Little Sifu Kitchen.
The rice sets are priced at RM14.90 nett, and are served with drinks and dessert. There are three set meals during my visit, namely the Hong Chicken Set Rice, the Chicken Curry Kapitan Set Rice and the Rendang Chicken Set Rice.
On the baking side of things, there's various layer cakes, sugee cake, butter cake, chicken pie, cream puff, potato curry puff, chicken puff and Shanghai pastry, among others.
My wife and I were invited to a meal at Secret Coffee Bear recently. We were warmly welcomed by the young husband-and-wife team running the cafe. To start our meal, we were treated to two different types of layer cakes, the Regular Layer Cake and the Chocolate-and-Mint Layer Cake. These are the signature cakes of the cafe. Time consuming to make, the layer cakes are priced at RM13.90. In comparison, the cafe's sugee cakes are only priced at RM2.20 per piece. The vast difference in price reflects the amount of work and time required to "assemble" the layer cake.
I would usually cut right through a layer cake and eat all the layers together, while my wife likes to peel each layer and taste them one by one. We are quite fond of the Chocolate-and-Mint Layer Cake.
Next came our main meal. We were served the Rendang Chicken Set Rice, their Chicken Curry Kapitan Set Rice. We took turns trying out the two rice sets. Each set comes with rice, half an egg, potato wedges, and accompanying vegetables such as lettuce, tomato slices and cucumber. The rice meal also includes a bowl of, if I am not wrong, asam pedas soup. Considering the chicken itself is already a spicy item, we told the owners that, if given a choice, we would prefer a clear soup. The gravy of the chicken is nice though.
For the dessert, they let us try their homemade curry puff. This we found to be especially tasty. I love it. At just RM2.90, we think the curry puff is meaty and good value for money. Like the layer cakes, we learned that it too is time consuming to make. To form the crispy layers, the dough has to be proved overnight, and then it has to be kneaded seven times, with breaks in between.
After our meal, my wife and I had a chance to sit down and talk with the owner. We exchanged cooking tips. My wife told them she was quite impressed with their curry puff. As for the layer cakes, my wife and I felt that they were a bit on the dry side, probably due to loss of moisture when kept in the chill case. We suggested keeping the cakes covered, or even adding a cup of water in the case, to help retain moisture around the cake, so that the cakes remain moist when served.
We had a nice dinner and thank Secret Coffee Bear for the invitation.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
