In 1965, Sekolah Menengah Lanjutan changed its name to Sekolah Menengah Bayan Lepas. It relocated out of Sekolah Rendah Bayan Lepas, and moved into the grounds of Chong Cheng Primary School, where it remained until its own building was completed in 1971, and was officiated by then prime minister, the late Tun Hussein Onn.

Sekolah Menengah Sungai Ara began classes with two school buildings, Blocks A and B, with Block C added in 1973. Block C houses workshops for Industrial Arts classes, while yet another block, Block D, completed in 1974, houses the science labs. Over the years, more buildings have been added to the school complex, including a multipurpose hall, Dewan SMKSA, new science labs and a surau.
