Sepuluh Kongsi Cemetery, Sungai Ara (9 April 2011)
Sepuluh Kongsi (GPS: 5.31213, 100.26509) is the name of the Chinese cemetery in
Sungai Ara. It was so named because the cemetery is for the use of all the different Chinese clans. Located across from the
Sungai Ara Army Camp, the cemetery comes alive every Cheng Beng (Qing Ming), when families return to offer prayers to their ancestors.
The name Sepuluh Kongsi is the result of mistranslation of 雜公司, which means "mixed clan assocation". This is assumed to mean "ten clan association", because the word for mixed (雜) and ten (十) are homophones. The Sepuluh Kongsi Cemetery was once at the far edge of town, but with the continuous urban sprawl, it is today hemmed in by residential development to the north and south.
